Tropical Diseases

Dengue fever is one of a number of tropical diseases that plagues the Gulf Coast region. Dengue is spread by mosquitos. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a skin disease that comes from the sand flea’s bite. These are among a host of other diseases caused by parasites, insects and bacteria that are being seen across the area. Obviously, hot and humid conditions don’t help the situation but the extreme poverty levels in this area compound the problem as people do not have access to or are able to afford health care.

Vibrio Vulnificus

Vibrio vulnificus is a fancy medical term for flesh-eating bacteria. There have been numerous cases reported in the Gulf Coast area in increasing years. This disease can be contracted by eating raw shellfish or swimming in salt water with open wounds. Those with liver or kidney conditions are more susceptible. Most who develop disease from the bacteria experience mild symptoms and recover. Those with compromised immune symptoms can get seriously ill and in some the resulting disease can be fatal.

Recent Natural and Environmental Concerns

The number of oil spills over the last few decades have thought to bring their own set of health warnings. Exposure to toxins raise concerns of long-term health problems.

Along with physical issues stemming from the oil spills, there are concerns for the mental and behavioral health of residents. Some studies have shown increased rates of anxiety and depression. Health officials have also seen correlating increases in substance abuse, particularly alcohol.

The Gulf Coast has been experiencing historically large red algae blooms.  People plagued with allergies and asthma or other respiratory issues are urged to take care on beaches and coastal areas. They can experience breathing difficulties if exposed to red algae.
